The holes are so small that residual water inside won't pass without something forcing them through (so it leaves a few drops of water inside when removed). It fits a broad range of mugs, and the lid is sealed so that when you use it to hold the infuser between uses, it won't leak. (The silicone gasket is firmly attached to the lid, so liquid won't seep between it and the steel.) Only stainless steel comes in contact with the liquid, so there is no impact on the taste.
